Support for deserving needy children towards their educational expenses to enable them to achieve their full academic potential and become self-reliant citizens.

Sponsor A Child (SAC) identifies needy students through schools across Mauritius and Rodrigues and allocates a monthly allowance, as follows:

  • Rs 750 for primary and lower secondary students,
  • Rs 1,000 for students in Grades 10 to 13.
  • Rs1,250 for students in Grades 10 to 13 who are enrolled in subjects such as Food and Nutrition, Arts, Design, Fashion which require the purchase of additional material. We refer to these students as being in a “technical” stream.

Generally, our members meet with sponsored students in schools or in the office. Schools provide the term results of the beneficiaries and complete the questionnaires we have for additional feedback on students’ academic and individual progress.

SAC is calling for corporate sponsorship to support its activities. Below is a table representing the level of funding required for a twelve-month period for sponsoring 1 to 5 students.

  1. Target population

The students we support come from large or broken families with little or no income and relying on social security benefits to make ends meet.

In 2023, our beneficiaries’ profile was as follows:

  • Nearly half were from single parent families through separation, divorce or death
  • Some 20% have been abandoned by their parents and living with grandparents
  • Around 5% whose parents were relying solely on the invalid pension to survive
  • A few living in an orphanage.
  1. Achievement

In its 20 years of operation, SAC has supported nearly 3,000 students throughout the schooling system, some right from primary school through to secondary. At least 60 students have gone on to pursue tertiary education.

In spite of the social and economic difficulties faced by students in 2022, the overall performance at national level was commendable.

National Education Certificate (NCE)

Nine oit of 10 students sitting for the exam were promoted to Grade 10.

School Certificate (SC)

Twenty three students sat for the exam and 18 passed. Of those 11 obtained 5 credits and went on to enrol at HSC level. It should be noted that among the successful students was one who came through the pre-vocational stream.

Higher School Certificate (HSC)

Seven of eight students, i.e. 87% obtained the HSC. Three students excelled and progressed to tertiary studies. One candidate was ranked 13th and eligible for a government scholarship.

  1. Issue

The recent changes to the allocation of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) fund has resulted in a marked drop in funding accruing from our traditional corporate sponsors. Additional corporate funding is needed to sustain our commitment to sponsored students.
